Nearly at speech delivery time

Room 19 have been working really well on speech researching and writing. We are looking forward to hearing many wonderful speeches next week.

A few are still finishing speeches off and need to be working on these at home.

Most are at the stage of practising their speech delivery. We have talked about what makes a great delivery, good pace - not too fast, effective use of pauses, some hand gestures, lots of eye contact...

Practice, practice, practice is what is needed over the next few days at home, in front of a mirror, the family pet, a parent or sibling.

If there was a competition for the most carefully made cue cards...

Finishing touches, nearly there...

The practice begins...

Preparing for our snow experience...

Over the next four weeks we will be learning about different aspects of the mountain environment. First up we looked at what to wear. After discussion, reading and recording, we headed outside to play 'dress the invisible skier'. Some made good choices and some needed to rethink.

Not sure that those psychedelic nylon leggings from the '90s will get group approval?

Careful selections are made, hunting for a merino or polyester base layer.

'Mr Invisible' looks all set for the slopes, good choices team!

It's speech writing time...

Next week we will start writing speeches for our Year 7 & 8 speech competition. This week we are looking at examples of good speeches and picking them apart to work out what features we should include in our own.

Today we watched a speech given by a Year 13 student, Joshua Losefa. The features we identified were:

  • he had a real purpose
  • used repetition
  • gave lots of examples, told stories
  • used pauses effectively
  • knew his speech really well, lots of eye contact
  • used hand gestures

At home, start brainstorming speech topic ideas.
