Enjoying the felting experience in Room 19

Today we checked out wool under a microscope and discovered it has scales. We are starting to put the clues together and work out how wool felts.

We also started to lay out fleece to make a flat piece of felt, however we were interrupted by the Beep Test (awesome results from Dom and Finn!) and didn't get finished. Yoda joined us this afternoon and couldn't resist a snooze in the box of fleece...

Mmmm, like your work girls, hope you're designing purrrfect cat pictures.

Yoda had a little help 'pulling up' the felt blanket.

Science inquiry gets underway.

 In Room 19 for science we're learning about sheep's wool and felt! We took the wool, put it inside our
shoes, then walked around for 24 hours.When we took our shoes off, we discovered we had created felt.

We discussed what the conditions were like inside our shoes, that could have led to this transformation and came up with:
*  heat
*  moisture
*  pressure and movement

Next we tried to achieve the same result with cotton wool and with polyester. However after 24 hours or longer inside a shoe, neither the cotton, nor the polyester had felted. There must be something about the wool fibre that causes it to felt ... next step in our inquiry is to magnify a wool fibre and see what we find.
