We are an enthusiastic bunch of Year 7 & 8 learners at Beckenham School. Read on to see what we get up to in Room 19.

A fabulous day!
After all our planning and hard work the day of the triathlon finally arrived. Room 19 rose to the challenge and the event ran very smoothly in their capable hands. We got wonderful feedback from parents and teachers, but the biggest buzz came from seeing how excited the Year 3 and 4s were, how hard they tried and their huge smiles.

Master Chef South Style
Today at technology the Year 8s each rolled a dice to choose which recipe they would create. Within each group every child followed a different recipe. Their focus and work ethic was superb; talk about Master-chefs in the making! I got to taste quite a few of the results and was rather impressed. Tu meke Year 8.

What fun we had at the fair!
A big thanks to all those who helped out at our Twilight Fair. A huge 'thank you very much' to the Fair Organising Team, it was a fabulous success. What was your highlight?

More art with letters.
Our final art project with letters has been to create letters out of salt dough. We are going to create; 'If you focus your attention you will achieve results!' on our classrom wall. Hopefully it will be up for you to see at Learning Conferences next week.
Triathlon Planning Continues
The entries are starting to come in and we have nearly confirmed our sponsors. Medals are being put together and finishing touches are going on the certificates. Tomorrow we hope to send out maps and triathlon tips to competitors. We've been 'Putting First Things First', I think we are now up to the 'second things'!

Stage One Triathlon Complete
Tomorrow we put our first week of planning into action; posters go up, notices and entry forms are printed and distributed and the Year 3 &4s hear about the event in a motivating and detailed talk. Certificates, medals, map and course description and training tips are all but done. There were big grins on the faces of the spot prize organisers when they got their first sponsorship confirmation; thanks to the Cupcake Collection. The buzz continues in Room 19.

Leadership in Action
This week we have begun our leadership project, organising a triathlon for Year 3 & 4 students at Beckenham. We have broken the organisation into 11 jobs, which the students are working on mainly in pairs. The children are thriving on this challenge! Today the course was 'plotted' out on the grass; entry forms and systems were being created; certificates, posters and medals designed; initial contact was made with companies for sponsorship; triathlon tips were researched; a talk is being composed to encourage entries and the school's sports gear stores were scoured for useful obstacle course equipment. Room 19 is a buzz with activity, collaboration and anticipation. I've been so impressed with the deep thinking.

Stiking Out
In our forth softball session today we focused on striking. To start with we learnt the technique by throwing rolled up newspapers at each other. Then we progressed to the real thing, and we kept hold of the bat! Lots of awesome hitting, tu meke Room 19!

Creating at Tech
Tuna and apple pies were on the menu at tech today for the Year 8s. If you were lucky, one may have come home for parents to sample (probably the tuna one!).
In the workshop, handy holders for cell phones, touch devices and even good old notepaper and pens were being made.

In this photo plastic is being heated so that it can be bent into shape.
Writing Descriptions
We have finished our recipes and they are looking fabulous on our wall. Our next writing topic is descriptions. Last week we learnt about the features of descriptions. This week we are writing pet descriptions. Thea and Jordy (guinea pigs who live across the road) visited on Monday so we could observe them. We've written lists of great nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs; tomorrow we'll use our word bank to write our first descriptions. Thea and Jordy may trek across the road again, to check out how we are going with our writing.

Greetings in Japanese
We are learning how to say hello at different times of the day in Japanese. This little song needs to be practised at home during the week, to help us learning these greetings.
